What Telegram Gets Right

Push notifications work well. When an agent finishes a long task, Telegram surfaces the result immediately without requiring you to check anything. The result comes to you. That passive awareness is useful for long-running tasks where you have moved on to other work.
Low friction matters for casual queries. A quick question, a one-off task, something you want to hand off while walking to a meeting , Telegram handles all of that with less overhead than opening a full desktop application and locating the right session.
For early Hermes users, Telegram was also where you figured out what the tool could do. The conversational interface made experimentation feel natural. You could try things without committing to a structured workflow, which is valuable when you are still learning what the tool is capable of and how it fits your work.
Where Telegram Falls Short
Multi-session management is the most significant limitation for power users. Telegram gives you one conversation thread per bot. Running three or four parallel workflows means scrolling through one long conversation trying to track what belongs to which task. It becomes genuinely unmanageable once you have a few active workflows running simultaneously.
Context file management through Telegram messages is clunky. Updating a memory file or revising a skill requires working through the chat interface, which was never designed for structured configuration work. You can do it. The experience is frustrating in proportion to how often you need to do it.

Native file system access changes how you interact with context. Drag a document directly into the conversation. Pull a file from a recent task without hunting through chat history. The Desktop interface treats files as first-class inputs rather than things you describe or paste in chunks.
The context panel shows exactly what memory and skills are loaded for a given session. On Telegram, you infer what an agent knows from how it behaves , which is slow and unreliable when something is misconfigured. On Desktop, you can see and edit the configuration directly. Debugging misconfigured agents drops from a frustrating process to a fast one.
Background agents run independently of your phone being online. The agent does its work server-side. You check the result when you are ready. That independence changes what you can assign to background agents without worrying about your device's connectivity or battery.
Speed and Cost
Telegram routes messages through Telegram's servers before they reach the API. Desktop calls the API directly. The latency difference is noticeable on multi-step workflows where each step waits for the previous response. The gap is not large enough to matter on a single query, but it accumulates over a ten-step workflow.
Cost is essentially the same. Both interfaces use the same API. Telegram adds a small overhead per message from the routing, but not enough to factor into any practical decision. If you were expecting Desktop to be meaningfully cheaper, it is not.

Running both interfaces simultaneously for four weeks made the differences concrete rather than theoretical. Telegram is not obsolete. It remains the better choice for mobile access and quick, low-context queries where the overhead of opening Desktop is not worth it.
