The Math

Anthropic is paying SpaceX $1.25 billion per month for GPU capacity. $45 billion total through May 2029. 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. 300 megawatts of compute power.

Anthropic's CFO Christian Ralph was asked what he spends his time on. The answer was not the IPO preparation. It was not product. It was not hiring. "I spend 70% of my time on compute , how to acquire more compute, how to get more compute."

That quote is the whole story.

Why SpaceX

SpaceX needs revenue to justify a $2 trillion IPO target. A $45 billion commitment from Anthropic is a revenue anchor that makes the public market math more credible. The two companies need each other in different ways and at different scales , which is what makes the deal possible.

SpaceX's Colossus 1 cluster is inference-optimized: 220,000 GPUs running at 300 megawatts. Colossus 2 , the next phase , is a homogeneous GB200 and B300 stack designed specifically for training. That is what Anthropic needs to build whatever comes after Mythos.

The Common Enemy

Dario Amodei and Elon Musk have different visions for AI, different philosophies about safety, and different personalities. They both want to topple Sam Altman.

That shared objective creates a deal that would otherwise be improbable. The enemy of my enemy is my friend , except here the friendship also costs $45 billion and involves the largest private compute lease in history.

When Elon's company merged xAI into SpaceX, 9 of the 12 xAI co-founders left. That is a 75% leadership departure from a company that had raised billions. The official framing was consolidation. The actual signal was something else. One of those signals: Musk needed the revenue that Anthropic's deal provides more than he needed all of those co-founders.

What This Signals About the AI Compute Race

The infrastructure dependency web in AI right now: Anthropic rents compute from Amazon, which invests in OpenAI. Microsoft holds 27% of OpenAI while profiting from Anthropic through cloud revenue. Google invested $40 billion in Anthropic while competing with it. And now Anthropic is paying Elon's company $1.25 billion per month.

Everyone is partnering with everyone while publicly competing with everyone. The consistent logic underneath: compute control and distribution leverage matter more than any particular alliance.

In AI, owning demand is useful.

Owning compute is leverage.
