The Lab
Founded as a non-profit research lab in 2015 with the explicit mission of building safe artificial general intelligence, OpenAI now operates as a capped-profit subsidiary valued north of $500B. The structural pivot was inevitable: aligning research progress with revenue means shipping product. ChatGPT, released in late 2022, became the consumer interface that defined the modern AI era.
The 2026 strategy is breadth. GPT-5.x covers general use, the o-series (folded into GPT-5.4 Think) handles slow reasoning, GPT-Image-2 owns the text-in-image category, Sora 2 owns video. Distribution comes from the Microsoft alliance plus a still-growing consumer subscription base. No rival ships a model line this wide.
The catch is the question still hanging over the company. Sam Altman's leadership through the November 2023 board crisis, the parade of senior researchers leaving for Anthropic and elsewhere, the public scrutiny on training data and labour practices — OpenAI's product distribution is undisputed, but its long-term moat against Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and the open-source frontier is not.
Models
GPT-5.5 Instant
Flagship
The default ChatGPT model since March 2026. 52.5% fewer hallucinations than 5.4 on high-stakes prompts in medicine, law, and finance. Lower verbosity by default, tool-use trained from the start. The model OpenAI quietly ships to every consumer ChatGPT user.

Best for
- General chat with the broadest plugin ecosystem
- Agent workflows where tool-use matters
- Production deployments at scale
GPT-5.4 Think
Reasoning
The slow-thinking option, descended from the original o-series. Outpaces every other reasoning model on AIME 2025 and SWE-bench Verified. Expensive per token. Reserve it for problems where wrong answers cost real money — not for daily chat.

Best for
- Complex multi-step reasoning
- Competition math and proof verification
- Research synthesis where the cost is justified
GPT-Image-2
Image
Best in class for images that need legible text baked into the composition. The Nano Banana family from Google is faster and cheaper for generic image generation, but for posters, infographics, marketing collateral, or any composition where letters must render correctly, GPT-Image-2 is the sticky pick.

Best for
- Posters with text baked in
- Marketing collateral and infographics
- Multi-image composition and dense edits
When to Pick OpenAI · When to Pick Someone Else

Each lab in the atlas comes with its own positioning, model line, and use cases. The point of organising the AI landscape by lab is that the answer to "which model should I use" almost always starts with "which lab is closest to what I'm trying to do."
